Study of a Man Dancing, 2013, video, 11 min.
Tzion Abraham’s work stretches the boundaries of the medium to raise reflexive questions on the way videos are screened and the importance of the medium in creating substantive contents in the work.
At the center of the frame, a dancer walks within a human circle, and the people around him photograph him using their mobile phones. Hazan uses this photographic documentation as raw material for his work, and presents the dance from the documenting audience’s various perspectives. The structure formed by the audience around the dancer produces a sequence of perspectives allowing the viewer to observe the dancer from several angles at the same time.

The work generates a cyclic progression blurring the boundary between reality and the photographic image. The audience viewing the work is echoic of the audience viewing the dancer and becomes an actual part of the work when it casts its shadow on the projected frame. At the same time, a dialogue is created between the flash lights from the mobile cameras and the lights of the video projectors screening the work in the museum space.
This work emphasizes the interactive effects of content and technique. For example, the frames were composed and the tempo of the piece was determined under the influence of the rhythm of the flash lights around the dancer. Using the editing technique and the dynamics of photography, the dancer’s body movements become continuous, while the dancing motions seem to merge with the photographic movements and editing work. The same applies to the chosen screening mode: the video is screened using different projectors with a wide range of qualities, producing diversity in the frame’s color and resolution qualities.
