In the video series Dancing Philosophy, Thomas Hirschhorn combines the themes examined by four major thinkers (Deleuze, Gramsci, Bataille and Spinoza) with the cheerful dance movements of four naked mannequins activated by the artist. In this manner, Hirschhorn examines a series of opposing concepts: thought and action, mind and body, “high” and “low” culture,” intellectual depth and superficiality. The dichotomy between the “serious” thinkers and the commercial dancing mannequins reflects the two opposite poles that shape the artist’s world.
