Tami Ben-Tor’s video and performance works feature the artist herself in the guise of various characters. Using simple devices such as a wig, a particular accent, a few gestures or mannerisms, Ben-Tor assumes transforms herself into a range of tragicomic figures characterized by pompous egos and an inability to critically reflect upon their own behavior. They are each trapped within their system of beliefs, clinging to truths and convictions concerning their identity. Ben-Tor is interested in the psychological states of these different characters, which are based on a combination of her observations and on fictitious inventions, including television characters who do not shy away from asserting themselves and voicing their opinions.
