After showing at the Taiwanese Pavilion for the 54th Venice Biennial in 2011, the young artist Su Yu-Hsien presents a new work, The Chair, on the occasion of this exhibition. The piece chronicles the journey of a folding chair as it travels from the artist’s studio in the rural district of Liujia into the city of Taipei and along the way transforms from an item of furniture into a work of art fit for the museum, by virtue of the artist‘s interventions. The Chair also describes the qualitative changes the chair undergoes on its trip, serving as a metaphor for the universal “subject” as the focus of Su’ narrative. Su thus observes the “moving borders” of the subject as he examines the ambiguous yet inextricable relationship between artwork and simple chair.
