Out of Focus, 2005, video, 3:09 min
Out of Focus was shot in a typical Georgian tavern, accompanied by popular singing in the background. Servet Koçyiğit chose to fix his lens at a single, narrow and permanent angle. Instead of a wide-angled panoramic view, the gaze is reduced to one of the man at the table, focusing only on the torso and the mouth.
The trilled singing comes out of the man’s mouth, permeating the entire space which is not in visual range. The consistent concentration on a limited excerpt of the occurrence elicits curiosity and anticipation for exposure of the remaining details, and the place becomes an archetype of sorts for any such tavern.
