Ofer Bessudo’s work possesses a voyeuristic character. The artist places his large-format camera on various rooftops and records night views in surrounding apartments. This slow exposure technique counterbalances the effects of the spy-like methods Bessudo uses to photograph the images. Instead of capturing indiscrete nocturnal incidents starring his unwary neighbors, Bessudo focuses on what is permanent and unmoving. Basically, he concentrates on the objects which furnish the apartments, instead of revealing details about their tenants. This technique creates a tension which piques our curiosity.
The images possess the quality of a mystery movie. We, the spectators, watch the photographer watching. Like in Hitchcock’s classic 1954 thriller Rear Window, we feel that something is about to happen. Nevertheless, unlike that film, Bessudo’s photographs do not suggest a clear narrative and it is up to us to imagine what the story behind them is about.
