At first the video piece 67 Bows resembles a scientific experiment exploring the collective behavior of birds. Inside Karlsruhe Zoo we observe a flock of flamingos, filtering food from their indoor pond, protected from the cold German winter. The peaceful community is abruptly interrupted by the sound of a gun being cocked and shot. With every gunshot, the birds respond in perfect concert with a collective bow, forthwith resuming their activity. The erratic rhythm of the shots prevents both birds and viewer from getting accustomed to the noise. With intense anticipation, the viewer awaits the next shots, which then come as a frightening surprise nonetheless. Tension and relaxation alternate. As in a specific demonstration of Pavlovian conditioning, after some time the flamingos start responding as soon as the gun is cocked – even when it is not accompanied by a shot.
