Mateo Maté’s installation, whose shape resembles that of the European continent, constitutes an inaccessible area within the exhibition space. It is carefully guarded by a uniformed individual, who, with the help of several surveillance cameras, ensures that there will be no trespassers.

Several obvious questions arise: Why is this territory being guarded? Is this due to security concerns, or perhaps to immigration-related issues? Who ordered the guard to protect this specific geographical area? And is it really necessary to do so?
Mateo Maté’s work leads us to reflect on the fact that in our everyday life, we are often unaware of being surveyed by various agencies, for a range of reasons that remain unknown to us. In the name of “security” (which is associated with different “dangers”), we individuals are deprived of our privacy, and have learned to take this undesirable condition for granted.
When an entire geopolitical region is guarded against the “intrusion” of others, the ability of a specific country to maintain its own policy on this subject is put to the test – raising questions about the difference between the interests of individual countries and those of the larger block of countries to which they belong.
