Arabesque, 2013-2014, wood installation
Kaiss’s installation is inspired by the arabesque decoration style, an Islamic type of ornamentation characterized by interlacing plant forms and abstract geometric or curvilinear motifs, dating back to the year 1000. The artist explains that while attending religious services in mosques, he would often admire the balance, linearity, symmetry, expansion and recurring patterns of arabesque designs. Consequently, back in his studio, he began exploring these geometrical motifs, deconstructing and reconstructing them.
