Many of Huma Bhabha’s works create identifiable objects by combining a large number of crude materials such as iron, wood, clay, plaster, and netting with ready-mades and recycled components. Bhabha appears to draw her inspiration from human history. Her sculptures, photographs, and woodcuts constitute figurative fragments that appear at first glance to be handmade archeological findings or cultural vestiges. The fragility of these objects stands out in contrast to the strength and resilience of the materials they are made of.
Bhabha’s works may be read as symbolizing a state of wandering and a journey among different cultures, which unfolds in both time and space.
