Quartette, 2003, video, 4:23 min
Communication and the lack thereof furnish a major theme for the works of the Moscow-based Escape Program group established in 1999. Issues pertaining to the impossibility or unwillingness to listen are addressed in the video piece Quartette and the short monologue text accompanying it. A string ensemble is seen playing a Beethoven quartette in a dark, intimate room suitable for chamber music, but the soundtrack plays a quartette by Shostakovitch. The incongruence between the visible image and the sound is gradually revealed to the viewer.
