The sciences of botany and entomology (the study of insects) developed significantly in the course of the 16th century. Taxonomy, the science of naming, describing and classifying organisms (including all plants, animals and microorganisms), developed somewhat later, in the 17th century. The consolidation of these three scientific fields had an important impact on the collections amassed in cabinets of wonder across Europe.
