Birds no’ 1 – 5, photographs, 2008
In the series of photographs “Birds #1-5,” Amit Berlowitz shifts the camera, raising it above the urban din. The gaze upward reveals a blue sky, the edges of treetops, and birds in flight, reminiscent of silhouettes against the backdrop of the sky. Despite the familiarity and prosaic concreteness of the scene, the photographs surrender very little information-the light is elusive, not indicating the time of day when they were taken; the place can be virtually anywhere, hence it abruptly becomes a noplace, leaving us planted on the ground in an unidentified spot, with head turned up.
