In these two conceptual works by Dora Garcia, the barrier between art, language, and philosophy breaks down, while the viewer is invited to challenge the artist’s premises, to be amused by them, or to reflect on their pertinence in the personal context of his own life.
The Golden Sentence is made of gold leaf, a material that transforms it into a literally “precious” sentence. This work is part of a series of sentences that Dora García composed in Spanish, and that have been translated into different languages (depending on the different locations where the sentences have been exhibited). The idea behind the “Golden Sentences” is to present “universal thoughts” that are at once very deep and very shallow. On the one hand, the term “Golden Sentence” seems to allude to the kind of philosophical manual that enlightens its readers with profound truths about life. On the other hand, it is vague enough to fit any culture and situation.
100 Impossible Artworks is an artwork that consists of a list of impossible works of art. Although they cannot actually be created, the act of enumerating them and reflecting on them through another work of art (the list featured in this exhibition) paradoxically enables them to be produced, albeit in an altogether different form
