Three Course Menu. Training (from White Lies) 2007, video, 24 min.
The work features a repetitive process of attempts to set a table in accordance with accepted cultural rules. The intern waiter obliges his trainer’s every instruction, time after time correcting his errors with calculated and careful movements. Suddenly, in a swift and confident motion the ground drops, the line separating the table and dishes laid on it is shattered in front of the diners’ perplexed expressions.
The work exposes the backstage of cultural mechanisms challenging the significance of meeting the demands of acceptable social codes in western society. It uncovers the tension between the cultured and meticulous and the wild and direct, between what is visible on the surface of social day to day and the depths of the mechanism upholding it.
