The furniture series “8 Bit” was originally designed for a children’s mathematics learning center at the LABORAL museum in Spain. The furniture is constructed of standard size pine beams used in building’s construction. The structure is simple, utilizing the beams and their fixed measurements as a modular system. The use of preset measurements produces correlation between the different units, turning them into a series. The title “8 Bit” is taken from digital art which uses old computer games for producing artistic images. The low resolution of the games restricts and dictates the images’ graphics, at an age when computer graphics can manufacture “realer than reality” images. The furniture in the series is in low resolution. The use of beams attached by simple screws, rather than various complex joints, guides both the design as well as the manner the furniture is used. The modularity and strength of the furniture are inherent to the materials of which they are made. The primal technique allows the design substantial freedom.
