Vacated Habitats
Tal Ben-Bassat’s large-scale photographic pieces settle for the absolute minimum necessary to depict loci and sites populated by mental emptiness. The private dwelling spaces and the public sites raise questions concerning the design of a modular and universal space. Furthermore, they expose a process of physical emptying which projects on mindsets, feelings and mental states, the focal point of Ben-Bassat’s works.
The virtual reality generated via an intricate, slow and Sisyphean process transpires in neutral spaces; these articulate a mental language that represents a design void, which in turn projects on the emotional detachment and solitude addressed by the works. The profound discrepancy between the punctilious, clean design of the spaces and their emptiness attests to the mental disorder bubbling under the ostensibly perfect surface.
