The creation of historical cabinets of wonders was motivated in part by a desire to establish a connection between the world of art and the natural world, and to demonstrate the existence of a divine unifying principle, or magical correspondence, underlying these different realms – the human and the natural, the microcosm and the macrocosm. This yearning for synchronism reached its climax in the second half of the 16th century, just as the New World began to offer up an inexhaustible supply of “wonders” that awakened a taste for the bizarre and the grotesque.
