As she made the beds, shopped for groceries, matched slipcover material, ate peanut butter sandwiches with her children, chauffeured Cub Scouts and Brownies, lay beside her husband at night – she was afraid to ask even of herself the silent question – ‘Is this all’?” (Betty Friedan, The Feminine Mystique)
In 1963 Betty Friedan wrote about “the problem that has no name”, the sense of dissatisfaction experienced by suburban housewives who felt they needed something more in their lives. Exactly fifty years after The Feminine Mystique, Inbal Mendes-Flohr deals with some of those same issues in her artworks, albeit from a different, very personal perspective. Femininity, feminism, gender, sex and power struggles are central to her works, where she explores the question: Where do women find the strength to “do it all”?
