Both Charcoal Laces and Monuments deal with memories. Yosef’s memories of her childhood in Ethiopia have become blurred with time and to a certain extent shaped by tales she heard from others. The artist attempts to reconstruct her memories and chooses charcoal as the media for sculpting her works for several reasons.

Charcoal is a material that alludes to something that existed but is not anymore. When looking at a piece of charcoal, the observer can only guess what it used to be in its previous form, but the real answer to that question will forever remain a mystery. In addition, the burning of wood and its transformation into charcoal may attest to the artist’s personal experience of moving from one culture to another. The irreversibility of the transformation process is inherent to the material used but may also allude to the artist’s state of mind. Finally, by using a burnt material symbolizing her past, Yosef is able to construct a personal memory which is entirely new and suited to her present life.
