Avinoam Sternheim wanders through the city streets, through abandoned and ruined areas, collecting whatever he finds to his studio. The knowledge hidden in the objects themselves, as he puts it, is his sculptural starting point. Sternheim’s sculptures are made of shutters, pieces of wood, fabrics, discarded metal and objects which combine into a complex and impressive construction which does not betray the humility of its components. By collecting and assembling waste and construction debris, the artist transports the materials from the world of consumption to the world of art, and out of destruction a new esthetic is created.
Sternheim is inspired by a broad range of visual and cultural sources – war movies, science fiction, disasters and apocalyptic worlds – to create statues reminiscent of aliens, monsters, cyborgs and androids. Their huge size is designed to generate a total experience which captures the viewers, engulfs them in the scene and takes them beyond everyday reality.
